Sir James Martin, 1820-1886, politician and chief justice, arrived in Sydney in 1821. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1845 and won a seat on the Legislative Council in 1848. Martin was an active member on the committee to draw up the constitution for New South Wales in 1852 and later became attorney-general in Cowper's government. He was appointed chief justice in November 1873. Martin served as President of the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition Commission, 1877, and as President of the New South Wales Commission for the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880 - Scope and Content1873-1880; Papers include: memorial to Sir James Martin from the Justices of the Peace of the Police District of Bathurst on the occasion of his holding his frist circuit court at Bathurst as Chief Justice of the Colony, 1873; correspondence with E.G.W.
