  • Scope and Content
    The volume contains 50 specimens of tapa cloth and 6 samples of feathers, human hair and twine. The text describes the origins of the cloth as Tahiti, Raiatea, Huaheine, Hawaii, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Tonga. However, none of the specimens is from New Zealand or New Caledonia.
    The title page is written by hand in ink, with words added in pencil. The full title, including pencil interpolations, reads: 'A Collection (50) of specimens of bark cloth (also feathers of small birds, hair of the natives, twine, plaited human hair &c.), as collected in the different voyages of Capt. Cook to the South Sea'
    Also included in the volume: a report on the book by Maggs Bros, booksellers, 4 April 1902; and a sheet of paper containing a brief transcription headed 'Method of making Cloth at Taheitee from Cook's Voyages in 1772, 3, 4 and 5. vol.1st.p.276'. These pages have not been digitised.
