Sir William Charles Windeyer (1834-1897), judge and parliamentarian, was born at London, only child of Richard Windeyer (1806-1847) and his wife Maria, nee Camfield. He arrived at Sydney with his parents in 1835 and was educated at W.T. Cape's school, The King's School, Parramatta, and the University of Sydney where he was among the first undergraduates. He graduated Bachelor of Arts (1856) and Master of Arts (1859) and was admitted to the Bar in 1857. In 1857 Windeyer married Mary Elizabeth Bolton (1836-1912). He was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Lower Hunter ((1859-1860), West Sydney (1860-1862,1866-1872) and the University of Sydney (1876-1879). Windeyer was Solicitor-General (1870-1872) and Attorney-General (1877, 1878-1879). In 1879 Windeyer was appointed to the Supreme Court of NSW, retiring in 1896. He was knighted in 1891.
