  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    J. C. Wickham commanded H.M.S. Beagle on a survey of the north-west coast of Australia, 1837-41. There was no official artist on board so Wickham provided some of the visual records of the voyage.
  • Scope and Content
Accompanying the drawing is a letter from H. F. Wickham (J. C. Wickham's son) to H. C. Anderson, Principal Librarian, The Public Library of NSW, dated 17 May 1905.
  • General note

Inscribed on the reverse of the drawing, probably in H.F. Wickham's hand, is: "Victoria River was so named by J.C. Wickham, captain of the 'Beagle', which explored N. Australia. Other sketches and papers connected with the 'Beagle's voyages were destroyed by a fire."
