    21 March 1872-23rd January 1873; This volume provides a record of the number of convicts present each night at the colonial penal establishment at Port Arthur. Each page is headed with Received, the date, and Discharged. Below this are recorded numbers that relate to the number of prisoners and cell numbers and their movement within cells, the Penitentiary, and the Insane Depot. Information recorded is: summary, strength last night, increase, total, decrease, as well as the signature of the officer-in-charge on that date (W. Townley, J. Lankester, A.W. Chatfield and G.W.H. Axtell). Convicts are are documented with various notes that include "from 5 to 6" or "from No.3 penitentiary".
