Augustus Charles Gregory led an expedition for the New South Wales government in search of Ludwig Leichhardt and his party who disappeared on an expedition in 1848. Gregory's expedition set out from the area near Ipswich in March 1858. They found a tree marked by Leichhardt, but drought conditions forced them to abandon the search and travel to Adelaide. - Scope and Content11 Sept. 1857-5 Apr. 1858; A fair copy in Gregory's hand (41 pages). The diary describes Gregory's preparations and the first part of the journey. He recruited expedition members and organised some of the equipment in Sydney where he was joined by his brother Charles who was appointed assistant commander. Gregory and five expedition members left Sydney on 12 January 1858, reaching Brisbane on 16 January. From there they proceeded to Ipswich to make further arrangements. On 24 March the party of 9 men left Juanda station and travelled by way of Euroomba station to the Maranoa River which they reached on 5 April, the last date of this diary.
