The work is not signed, titled, or dated. The name of the sitter is derived from a non-contemporaneous handwritten note affixed to the reverse of frame. "Copy of portrait of: - / George Thomas Palmer / Relationship to / Edward C. Close, (Senr..) / Brother-in-law". As the work is a copy, it is difficult to discern the date of execution.
Beneath the above inscription is another, possibly in the same hand, "Portrait of late / George Thomas Palmer [son of Commissary Palmer]"
