Raphael Clint, born in Hereford, was an engraver, lithographer, printer and surveyor. In 1835 Clint moved his successful engraving practice from Hunter Street to King Street, Sydney, where charts, maps, and plans of Australia and New Zealand were issued. As a result of economic depression in the early 1840's, Clint's business moved several times before re-establishing in Hunter Street for a brief period from 1842 to 1843. From 1843 Clint worked from his residence in George Street, then at various locations until his insolvency in 1847.

Clint's Hunter Street business of 1842-1843 advertised lithographic printing, seal engraving, and copper-plate engraving and printing.
The date of the sundial is derived from the years of Clint's Sydney practice and A.W. Scott's periods of occupancy at Ash Island (1835-1847).
