Robert David FitzGerald (1902-1987), surveyor and poet, was born and lived most of his life in Hunters Hill, N.S.W.. His father, Robert David (b.1864), was a civil engineer and surveyor, and his grandfather, Robert David FitzGerald (1830-1892) was a surveyor and naturalist. His maternal uncle was John Le Gay Brereton, poet and Professor of English literature at the University of Sydney. At Sydney Grammar School FitzGerald wrote poems under the nom de plume 'Cruma-boo' for the college magazine Sydneian, 1918-1919. He was appointed a surveyor with the Native Lands Commission in Fiji, 1931-1936, surveying tribal and clan boundaries. His wife, Majorie Claire, nee Harris, joined him for part of his time there, during which he corresponded regularly with his sister, Kathleen (Kit). FitzGerald successfully combined his professional career as a surveyor in the Commonwealth Department of the Interior, 1939-1965, with a distinguished literary one. He was Visiting Lecturer in English at the University of Texas for the Spring semester of the 1962-1963 session. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for poetic achievement in 1951 and made a member in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 1982. In 1985 he was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Melbourne. FitzGerald had four children, Kerry, Rosaleen, Phyllida and Desmond.
