  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Garland (1862-1921), barrister and parliamentarian, was born at Scotland, son of Robert and Isabella Garland. He was educated in Scotland graduating from the University of Edinburgh with a Bachelor of Laws in 1886. Garland travelled to Australia in 1887 and was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1888.He was appointed King's Counsel in 1910. He was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Woollahra (1898-1901) and Tamworth (1903-1904). He was appointed to the NSW Legislative Assembly (1908-1921) by Sir Charles Wade. He was appointed Minister of Justice and Solicitor General (1909-1910, 1916-1919) and Attorney General (1919-1920).     John Garland married Isobel, nee Chisholm, on 21 December 1896.
