James Dunlop, astronomer, was born in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland. In 1821 he came to Australia, with Charles Rumker, as an assistant at the new observatory at Parramatta. He was appointed Superintendent in 1831. In 1847 he retired to his farm at Kincumber on Brisbane Water where he died in 1848. - Scope and ContentLetter from Andrew Aitken, Overton, Scotland, addressed to James Dunlop Residing near Government House, Parramatta, New Holland, care of John Wylie from Dalry. The letter, from one of Dunlop's friends, conveys news of his friends and relations at Overton. Also included is the front page of an envelope addressed to 'Mr James Dunlop, Kincumber, Brisbane Water' which is annotated in pencil '1852'.
