Edmund Edgar, also known as Eagar, and by the aliases Bults and Bult, was a painter, engraver, and lithographer. Prior to his transportation to Australia for robbery in 1825, Edgar had worked in London as a miniature painter. The drawing was originally stored in a wooden frame that is now located at F 187.
Two entries in the Sydney Morning Herald Index refer to Matthew Wellington. The first, dated 15 May 1843 mention letters awaiting Matthew Wellington at the G.P.O. The second, dated 16 July 1844 is a surety given by Matthew Wellington for Mr Wright, Wharfinger, accepted by the City Council -- See notes filed at PXn 659.
The handwriting style of the ink inscription is similar to that on the back of a portrait of an unidentified sitter, attributed to Edmund Edgar (ML ref. SPF/Edgar, Edmund).
