  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Mildred Creed (1842-1930), physician and parliamentarian, was born in England, son of John and Mary Creed. He was educated in England and served a two year apprenticeship to a surgeon in London before travelling to Melbourne, Victoria, with his family in 1861. In 1862 he returned to England where he studied medicine, graduating from the University College London (1866) and the University of Edinburgh (1866). Creed returned to Sydney where he was appointed resident physician at the Sydney Infirmary. In 1868 he was registered by the NSW Medical Board and he settled in Scone where he established a large medical practice. In 1882 he returned to Sydney establishing a medical practice at Woollahra. He was editor of the Australasian medical gazette (1882-1893), an honorary surgeon at Sydney Hospital (1883) and secretary of the NSW branch of the British Medical Association (1883-1886) and president (1887, 1892). Creed was a trustee of the NSW Public Library (1901-1926). Creed was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Upper Hunter (1872-1874) and appointed a member of the NSW Legislative Council (1885-1930). Creed published a number of books and pamphlets including his autobiography My recollections of Australia and elsewhere 1842-1914.
