  • Scope and Content
    Album comprising a dark green velvet cover predominantly exposed on the spine, gilt edged pages, front and back cover with light brown bakelite panels bearing oak leaf pattern in relief, and gilt clasp at sides for closing mechanism.

    1-22. Portraits of unidentified Maori men, women, and children. Most are dressed in traditional clothes, that include feather cloaks, hei-tiki (neck pendant), ear and hair ornaments. One male is holding a taiaha (fighting staff) / photographed by T.E. Price

  • General note

    Nos. 1-22. consist mainly of individual portraits, with some couples represented (being women with children and two women together).
    Nos. 11 and 17. The sitters are dressed in European clothes.
    No. 23 has an inscription on the reverse that is difficult to decipher, that possibly reads "Varanau owned by Mah..."
    No. 30 has a piece missing from the surface of the photograph.
    According to information from the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington, New Zealand, Thomas E. Price operated a photographic studio in Masterton from 1879-1900. John Davis was a photographer who worked in Apia, Samoa from the 1880's until his death in 1893. Photographs are dated from this period.
    Some photographs bear pin holes, indicating they were previously stored or displayed in another location from the album.
    The album is unable to be closed as the volume has expanded.
