  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Robert Hoddle (1794-1881) arrived in Sydney in 1823, where he worked as a surveyor. In 1837 he was posted to the newly established settlement at Port Phillip where it is said he was responsible for the grid layout of Melbourne. He was an active artist documenting landscapes on his extensive travels.

  • Scope and Content
    1. View of Murrengenberg Mountain and Bundawang Mountain. [This wash drawing depicts an incident in ca. 1829 whilst Hoddle was surveying the county of St. Vincent, near Pigeon House Mountain. Hoddle noted that the land in this district was particularly harsh and hostile. This drawing appears to be an earlier version of a more finished watercolour which depicts the killing of a wild bullock (PX*D 319 f.12). This drawing includes an Aboriginal figure, apparently travelling with the party].
    2. Murre-Murrang and Wallanga near Jervis Bay. [This watercolour was probably made in the late 1820s when Hoddle was employed in surveys of the southern coastline. Pigeon House Mountain can be seen in the background - Hoddle had reached it in September 1828].
    3. Boorel [Booral] near Stroud. [Hoddle visited Stroud in 1840, whilst on sick-leave, to see his daughter, whose husband was employed by the Australian Agricultural Company (AA Co). Booral was the AA Co. township, at the head of the Karuah River].
    4. Near Kiama, Illawarra, New South Wales [This drawing was probably made in 1830, when Hoddle was asked to attempt to open a path from the settlement at Bong Bong to the coast, a difficult task because of hostile terrain].

  • General note

The significance of these watercolours lies in their depiction of an inhospitable landscape prior to any significant development or settlement -- Acquisition Notes, Nov 2004.
