Edmund Lockyer (1784-1860) served as a soldier in India and Ceylon, rising to the rank of major, before being transferred to Sydney in 1825. One year later he was ordered to establish a settlement at King George Sound. He sold his commission in 1827 and took up a grant of land in Marulan, NSW which he named Lockyersleigh.
