  • General note

At the time of this photograph, brunette Louise Carbasse was `the clever Comedy Sketch Artist now starring with Rickards circuit'. Two years later she was in Hollywood and had metamorphosed into the blonde Louise Lovely. She appeared in about fifty-five motion pictures between 1911 and 1922 and was Australia's first Hollywood star of the silent era. Theatrical photographer Rudolf Buchner's image of her is carefully lit, so that Carbasse appears as an ethereal beauty. Not surprisingly, another of his portraits of her was used as an advertisement for `Bickford's Alpine Snow' moisturiser in The Theatre of June 1913. -- Curator of Photographs, Mitchell Library, 2003
