  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Irish born George Ward Cole, was a merchant and politician. After his arrival in Melbourne in 1840, Cole operated paddle-steamers on the Yarra and in Port Phillip Bay and built the City of Melbourne. Cole served on the Legislative Council from 1853-1855 and had interests in social and economic matters, particularly in realtion to unemployment and industry -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography.     The sitter of this portrait was identified after comparison with a photograph of Thomas Woolner's plaster portrait medallion of George Ward Cole held at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne (see Decorative arts from the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne: National Gallery of Victoria, 1980, p.111 ML 745.0740994/1).
