- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Irish born George Ward Cole, was a merchant and politician. After his arrival in Melbourne in 1840, Cole operated paddle-steamers on the Yarra and in Port Phillip Bay and built the City of Melbourne. Cole served on the Legislative Council from 1853-1855 and had interests in social and economic matters, particularly in realtion to unemployment and industry -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography.
