  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Chang the Chinese Giant was born in 1841 in Canton Province, China. At a claimed 8 feet 2 inches (2.49 metres) tall, he travelled the world as a curiosity for twenty-five years. He arrived in Victoria from America via New Zealand at the end of 1870 and was photographed at Ballarat. He later married his second wife Catherine Santley in Australia, before settling in Bournemouth, England. -- Notes by the Curator of Photographs, State Library of NSW, Sept 2004
