    Walter Gassner was born on 17 March 1912 in Vienna, Austria. He was a qualified actuary and talented linguist.
    On 15 August 1938 he was arrested and jailed as `kein Vollarier', that is, not a full Aryan. He was transported to Buchenwald on 25 September 1938 where he remained until 27 May 1939. Following his release, he migrated to Australia arriving in October 1938.
    He was interned as an enemy alien during the war years and worked on farms around Leeton. He married Regina in Australia and corresponded extensivley with family and friends in Australia and Europe.
