  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Arthur Martin a'Beckett (1812-1871), surgeon and parliamentarian, arrived in Sydney in November 1838 with his wife Emma Louise, nee Elwin. He was a member of the NSW Legislative Council from May 1856 to November 1860. His son William Channing a'Beckett (1846-1929), pastoralist and parliamentarian, was a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly in the seat of The Bogan from February 1889 to June 1891 and from May 1892 to June 1894. William Channing a'Beckett married Jessie Gertrude Smith in 1884. Arthur a'Beckett's daughter Emma Mary married in 1858, William Frederick McCarthy, who looked after his father-in-law's business interests while he was in England. Their daughter Emma Maud (1859-1949), later Dame Maud McCarthy, served as a nursing sister during World War, 1914-1919.
