  • General note

    Conserved 1992

Commercial traveller and publican, Stephen Butts has chosen to depict himself in front of his fashionable Macquarie Street residence on his favourite horse. By parading his possessions Butt was making clear - intentionally or otherwise - his position in, and aspirations towards, society. The middle classes would not have approved of such blatant display. His choice of artist, Joseph Fowles, was not a known portrait painter, but rather a marine and animal artist. Source: Backler & Friends in The Picture Gallery exhibition guide, State Library of NSW.
