  • Scope and Content
First journal is dated 1 May 1841 1 July 1847, and is in its original leather decorated binding (manufactured by Cowan & Co., Edinburgh). The front flyleaf is inscribed 'Journal', 'Swanlea', 'Thom.s Hayes'. The early journal is believed to have been written by Frederick Oglivie, Edwards brother, until his death in 1846. However, the journal appears to be in at least two different hands.
Second journal is dated 17 February 1850 24 February 1858, and is in a later State Library binding. The entries dating from the early 1850s are thought to be in Edward Ogilvies own hand until Saturday 24th Dec 1853. Entries from 1854 are in the hand of manager Thomas Hawkins Smith, who was left in charge of Yulgilbar during Mr Ogilvies absence in England.
Third journal is dated 25 February 1858 January 1861 and is in its original leather binding. The front flyleaf is inscribed 'Journal 1858, Ledger'. It appears to be in several different hands, probably Ogilvie's later managers who took over the daily recording of Yulgilbar station life. It mentions the laying of the foundation stone of Yulgilbar castle on Wednesday 2nd May 1860.
A fourth volume contains notes on the journal by Sir Kenneth Street and notes on the handwriting in the second journal compiled when the journals were being transcribed (see below). Also a copy of a hand-drawn map of the Yulgilbar property ca. 1850-1860 showing out-stations, tracks and other topographical details referred to in the diaries. (Original map is said to be in the possession of the Clarence River Historical Society).
Typed transcipts of the journals, for the years 1850-1861 and a partial transcipt of Vol.1 were compiled by Jessie Street in the 1950s. They are located at ML MSS 1686 Add-On 2203/11
