  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Hamilton Hume was born near Parramatta in 1797. His parents moved to Appin in 1812. His first journey of exploration to the Berrima district in 1814 was followed by others to Lake Bathurst, Goulburn Plains, Jervis Bay, Clyde River and Yass Plains. In 1824 he was joined by William Hovell in their famous expedition to Port Phillip. He was appointed to Charles Sturt's journey into the interior in 1828. After Hovell was feted on a visit to Geelong in 1853, Hume became convinced that his contribution to the discovery of Victoria had been overlooked. In 1855 he released a pamphlet setting out his version of the 1824-25 expedition. Hovell replied with a publication of his own.
