  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Gilmour Lockley (1865-1937), bookseller, publisher and journalist, was born at Waterloo in 1865. In 1878 he began work in the bookshop of Mr William Maddock, where he stayed for 17 years. He then worked at Angus & Robertson until 1907, where he would have met Henry Lawson. He wrote gardening columns for newspapers under the name "Florist" and "Redgum", and was Director of the Lockley Library. He was a member of the Ku-ring-gai Shire Council for 12 years and its president for one term. Lockley died in 1937.

    T. J. Henry was the father of aviator and shipmaster, Henry Goya Henry.

    Lawson's signed note in pencil of the sale of his publishing rights in 14 listed poems for the sum of 3 pounds appears on the first page featuring the poem 'Outside'. The agreement bears the signature of a witness, Elsie M. West. An additional 9 titled poems and 1 untitled and incomplete poem by Henry Lawson are also enclosed.
