  • General note

    The albums were incomplete with some pages vacant at the time of accessioning in July 2004.
    The photographs were subsequently removed from each album and allocated a number that corresponded with the album page number the material was displayed in.
    Some photographs have been identified by comparison with; Stephen family - collection of photographs being mainly studio portraits of Stephen family members, 1858-1949, located at PXA 1024.
    Where dates are not provided but a photographer's stamp is present, photographs are dated by: The mechanical eye in Australia : photography 1841-1900 / Alan Davies & Peter Stanbury ; with assistance from Con Tanre. Melbourne : Oxford University Press, 1985
    ALBUM ONE
    Embossed on the spine, "MLMSS 777/16/Pt.1".
    Several photographs are unidentified.
    ALBUM TWO
    A watercolour drawing has been pasted onto the front endpaper and remains in the volume (see PXA 1025/Box 3).
    A handwritten contents list, written in ink and numbered 1 to 34, is at the front of the album. This list has been amended, with some names crossed out in pencil. It is uncertain whether this list directly corresponds with the identity of the sitters of these portraits.
    Some album pages have an inscription identifying the sitter of the portrait.
    No.1 has been identified with comparison of an albumen print held by the Mortimer Rare Book Room, Smith College Libraries, USA, Online July 2004.

    Albert Alexander Leslie Stephen, (album 3 number 17) birth date supplied by Alastair Stephen, August 2010. He was wounded at Ypres and died on October 31 1914. aged 35.
