  William Bligh is best known for his voyage to the South Seas in HMS Bounty which ended in mutiny in 1789. In 1791-93 he commanded HMS Providence on a second voyage to transfer breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies. In March 1805, under the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks, he accepted the post of governor of New South Wales. He left England in February 1806 on the transport Lady Madeleine Sinclair escorted by HMS Porpoise. He was accompanied by his daughter Mary and her husband Lieutenant John Putland. He remained governor of New South Wales until his deposition in 1808.
• Scope and Content
  This letter was written from the Lady Madeleleine Sinclair several months before she sailed for New South Wales. In it Bligh discusses his preparations for the voyage and his fear that he may be delayed by having to attend a court-martial.
