    William Bligh is best known for his voyage to the South Seas in HMS Bounty which ended in mutiny in 1789. In 1791-93 he commanded HMS Providence on a second voyage to transfer breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies. He was governor of New South Wales from 1805 until his deposition in 1808.
    Sir Evan Nepean was under-secretary of state in the Home Office when New South Wales was founded. At the time this letter was written he was under-secretary of the Admiralty. He was appointed secretary of the Admiralty in 1795.
  • Scope and Content
    Letter (with transcript) from William Bligh to Sir Evan Nepean referring to preparations for the second breadfruit voyage to Tahiti and the West Indies. Bligh reports that he will be ready to sail by the end of May, requests his orders and mentions the Dutch Governor of Timor, Timotheus Wanjon, (who had been of great help to Bligh after the Bounty mutiny) as a person worthy of recommendation. Also included is a list of items to be traded with the Tahitians for breadfruit plants.
