  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The second son of William Bedford and Martha (nee Pickett), Edward Samuel Pickard Bedford was a surgeon and politician. After the family migrated to Hobart Town from England in 1823, Bedford operated a private practice and held various medical positions including assistant to the Colonial Surgeon (1829), commissioner in lunacy (1856), as well as founding St Mary's hospital in Campbell Street. In addition to his medical career, Bedford had diverse interests being elected to the Legislative Council of 1856, and publishing a paper on Australian zoology, and collector of art. In 1863 he migrated to Sydney where his sister, Eleanor Stephen (wife of Sir Alfred Stephen) lived. Bedford married Mary Selby of Wilmington Kent in 1832.
