- Scope and ContentThe portrait of Quong Tart's mother is in the style of Chinese ancestral portraits for the period. It shows her seated and dressed in traditional costume with her embroidered rank badge. These portraits were often painted posthumously and were hung in a family temple or alter to be venerated at important anniversaries. Quong Tart is said to have returned from his 1888 visit to China with portraits of his mother and father (Reference: Dawn, 1 June 1889) and they were later displayed at an altar in his home Gallop House in Ashfield.
