    Lorimer Fison (1832-1909), clergyman and anthropologist, was born in Suffolk, England. He served with the Australasian Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society in Fiji from 1863 to 1884. He was Principal of the Training Institution for Natives at Navulea

    Selections consisting of the following: Folder 1. Letters to Lorimer Fison; George Taplin, 1873; R. H. Codrington, 1892-1893; William MacGregor, 1888; Basil Thomson, 1893; A. W. Howitt, 1905; J. G. Frazer, 1907; J. B. Thurston, 1872 (incomplete) and 1893. Subject matter includes: New Guinea ethnology and New Guinea/Melanesian languages; Fijian culture and Fijian/Tongan linguistics. Folder 2. Correspondence with J.G. Frazer, 1896-1907 (mostly anthropology of Australian aborigines). Folder 3. Notes and tables. Includes seven returned questionnaires. Principal subjects are kinship and language among the Australian aborigines, but there is also material on Dobu (New Guinea) and Fijian languages. Includes kinship tables for tribes in the Murray River, S. Aust.; Murray/Darling; Yorke Peninsula, S. Aust.; Omeo and Gippsland, Vic.; Jervis Bay, N.S.W. areas. Folder 4. Various articles including: "Land tenure in Fiji"; Rev. S. B. Fellows' "Grammar of the Pannieti dialect, British New Guinea, together with comprehensive vocabulary"; comparative lists of the vocabulary of New Guinea dialects and languages. Folder 5. Articles by Fison, H. E. Pain; critique by E. M. Curr on Fison's article on kinship
