  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In its New England Microfilming Project of 1970 and 1976 , the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau obtained microfilm copies for its sponsoring libraries of more than 2,000 logbooks of American whaling and trading ships that visited the Pacific in the 19th century. Subsequently, a team of researchers was engaged to read the logbooks on film to estab lish where the ships went in the Pacific. The Pacific in this case was defined as Australian, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Information sheets were prepared for each ship giving the captains's name, etc., the location (s) copied, and details of the ship's itinerary. The sheets were used in the compilation of indexes published by Bureau
