    The catalogue was prepared by Titian Ramsay Peale, an artist-naturalist with the United States Exploring Expedition, while he was working at the U.S. Patent Office in 1846. The Expedition, under Commodore Charles Wilkes, visited the Tuamotu Archipelago, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Lord Howe Island, Australia, New Zealand, the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands and Hawaii
