  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Ian Grabowsky, born in Finland in 1899, was actively associated with New Guinea aviation from 1931 to 1937 as a pilot and manager for Guinea Airways Ltd. He began compiling his history of New Guinea civil aviation in 1962 for the Commonwealth Department of Civil Aviation. Ill health in 1967 prevented his continuing it beyond the year 1935. (For further details of Grabowsky's career and his compilation see Pacific Islands Monthly for February, 1968, p. 14)
  • Scope and Content
Beginning in the year 1913, when the use of balloons was mooted for the exploration of New Guinea, the history traces the development of civil aviation in the territory in great detail to the year 1935. The material is presented in diary form from a wide range of published and unpublished sources. No attempt has been made to write it up as a literary narrative
