    Joseph Edward Hawkins, master of the schooner Thistle, sailed from Sydney on 25 March 1891 on a trading voyage to Noumea and the Solomon Islands where he collected a cargo of copra, ivory nuts and turtle shells. He returned to Sydney on 4 July 1891.
  • Scope and Content
    Journal of J.E. Hawkins on the Thistle. Includes a list of the crew and one passenger, Thomas Jennings of Balmain, Sydney. The fin of a flying fish (?) was found between the pages beginning 25 May and 29 May. Inscribed by Hawkins : 'To my young and esteemed Balmain friends this journal is most respectfully written, 1891'.

    The Mitchell Library also holds the log of the barque Nautilus, commanded by Joseph Edward Hawkins on a blackbirding voyage in 1887-1888 (MLMSS 2842: microfilm copy at CY 3107, frames 1-34).
