Kai Tai Chan, architect-turned-choreographer and director, was born in Penang, Malaysia. In the 1960s he moved to Sydney and graduated as an architect from the University of NSW.

In then early 1970s, Chan had been working with London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and was co-director of Another Dance Group. He also studied at the Gulbenkian Choreographic Summer School under Glen Tetley.

One Extra was formed in Sydney in 1976, originally housed at the Stanley Palmer Culture Palace in Darlinghurst, and later at venues including Performance Space in Redfern, the Seymour Centre, and Marionnette Theatre in the Rocks.

Initially One Extra was composed of like-minded artists with little or no dance training. Works reflected their diverse experience and interests. The main aim was to break down the barriers between the different performing arts.

Following continued battles with the Australia Council for funding, Kai Tai Chan resigned as Artistic Director in 1991.

Chan's partner is Garry Lester, performer, teacher and choreographer.
