  A Magnificent spectacle caption -- The English actor, manager and playwright Wilson Barrett toured with American actor Maud Jeffries for J. C. Williamsons in 1897, and again from 1902 to 1903. Sheridan Knowles Virginius was performed on both tours. Barretts interest in ancient Rome inspired him to write the popular biblical melodrama The Sign of the Cross, which was first staged in Australia in 1897 with Julius Knight in the lead role.
