  • General note

Previously believed to be Eleanor Stephen who died in 1861, the girl in this portrait is about twelve years old and is therefore more likely to be Agnes Victoria, a younger sister of Eleanor. This is confirmed by comparision with portraits of Anges Victoria Stephen in the Stephen family collection (located at PXA 1024 and PXA 1025).
The ambrotypes show the subject of the portrait in slightly changed poses.
