  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Gould (1804-1881) illustrated and described the birds of Europe, Great Britain, Australia, Asia, New Guinea, and also humming-birds, toucans, tragons, and partridges of America. His publications include "Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle" (5 vols, 1838-1841), "The Birds of Australia" (1840-1848), "An Introduction to the Trochilidae, or family of humming-birds" (1861) and "Mammals of Australia" (1863). Most of Gould's illustrations were taken from stuffed specimens but he observed some species in their natural habitat. He visited Australia in 1838-40. His secretary Edwin Price wrote many of his letters and accounts
