  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Arachnida Section of the British Museum (Natural History) Department of Zoology was formally set up in 1913 when the former Invertebrate Section was split up. However correspondence in this class dates from 1904, just before the appointment of Arthur Stanley Hirst, who succeeded R.I. Pocock. Hirst was followed by Susan Finegan (1927-1936) and Richard James Whittick (1936-1940). The section was renamed Arachnida and Myriapoda Section in 1932
  • Scope and Content
Correspondence of successive heads of the Arachnida Section (and earlier correspondence of R.I. Pocock of the old Invertebrate Section) covering the acquisition, loan and exchange of specimens, enquiries from amateur and professional zoologists, medical personnel, furnuture dealers and others, and arachnid research. Selected correspondence filmed here consists mainly of letters from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific regarding spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks
