  • Scope and Content
    Records kept mainly by medical personnel relating to medical services and conditions particularly during the Second World War, but also during World War I, the Maori War, 1863-1865, and operations in Malaya, 1951-1960, and Borneo, 1965-1966. Most of the records relate to Australian and New Zealand forces. The records include letters, maps, plans of trenches, minutes, reports, statistics, photograpahs, scrapbooks, newspaper cuttings, casualty list and diaries. Sujects include: campaigns in the Dardanelles and the Middle East; conditions in Japanese prisoner of war (POW) camps in Changi and in Thailand; hospital ships; reminiscences of soldiers at Gallipoli; tropical medicine; accounts of massacres and torture by Japanese soldiers in Singapore, and other subjects.     The copied material includes: (1) Papers, 1915-1917, of Lieut. Col. M. Dunning, relating to campaigns in the Dardanelles and the Middle East. (2) Papers, July - Sept. 1915, of Lieut. Col. G.J.S. Archer, relating to the 40th Field Ambulance at Gallipoli. (3) Reports, 1942-1945, relating to the Japanese occupation of Malaya and Singapore. (4) Medical reports, 1943-1945, concerning Changi POW Camp. (5) Reminiscences of Irish soldier Private Arthur Morgan and Australian soldier Corporal Cockfield while serving at Gallipoli in 1915. (6) Diaries, 1901-1946, of Lieut. Col. John G. Bell, with entries relating to his service at Gallipoli, Singapore and Malaya. (7) Papers 1923-1948, of W.O. Edward F. Doughty, relating to his service in the Far East and imprisonment at Changi.;
