  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Makereti, also known as Maggie Papakura, was born at Whakarewarewa. She achieved fame as the guide to the Rotorua hot springs. After 1911 she married R.C. Staples-Brown and lived at Oxford. Assisted by T.K. Penniman she began to compile a book on Maori life, "The old time Maori", published in 1938
  • Scope and Content
    The collection contains drafts and material for "The old-time Maori" including files on social organisation, marriage, children, food, fire, houses, war and weapons; papers arranged by T.K. Penniman including files on weaving and tatooing, time, mythology, history, games, dances, etc.; notes and jottings; index cards of notes on Tuhourangi, origin of Maori face, Maori symbolism, and letter and poems by T.K. Penniman, 1936. Also includes geneaologies; Maori writings, ca. 1893-04; Rotorua visitors book, 1902-3; ephemera, letters and cuttings, 1900-19; album of cuttings and photographs relating to 1911 Festival of Empire and subsequent career of "Princess Iwa"
