Tory MP, 1784-97; Lord of Treasury, 1786-97; member of Board of Control for Affairs of India, 1793-97; Governor-General of India, 1797-1805

Contains official correspondence and other papers of Wellesley while Governor General of India, particularly relating to relations with Southeast Asia and New South Wales. Much of the official correspondence is concerned with the administration of Prince of Wales Island (Pinang) and the expedition against Batavia, 1800-1801. Other topics include convicts from N.S.W. settling in India; expeditions against Malacca and Moluccas; spice plantations; export of spirits to N.S.W.; French and Dutch possessions in The East Indies; and papers relating to R.T. Farquhar. Also includes correspondence of Major M. Shawe, 1803-1804
