Founded 1754 for raising funds and granting premiums for promoting improvements in the liberal arts, sciences, manufactures, etc. After 1840s chiefly concerned with organizing lectures, publishing papers, promoting exhibitions etc. After 1852 a small number of colonial societies established

(1). Transactions, 1788-1845, including premiums and medals awarded for imports and manufacturing initiatives in the colonies. (2). Committee minute books, 1793-1885, concerning premiums and medals and other matters dealt with by the committees for Agriculture, Chemistry, Institutes, Manufactures, Mechanics, Colonies and Trade and Food. (3). Correspondence, 1797-1850, and papers, 1844-1845, relating to products from the colonies.
