    A volume labelled "Uncle Roberts' letters, May 31st, 1874" containing letters and journals of Robert Henry Codrington, Anglican missionary in Melanesia, headmaster of St. Barnabas' College, Norfolk Island, 1867-87, and pioneer Pacific anthropologist. Three journals 1872-75, describing travels in Melanesia, life among the Mota people, slave trading, and island legends, customs and crafts. The killing of Lt. Bower of H.M. Sandfly in 1874 is treated in the third journal. The letters 1867-82 are written to Codrington's brother Tom and give detailed descriptions of life on Norfolk Island, travels in Melanesia, the impact of European culture on island life, and the death of Bishop Patterson. His letters reveal his interest in anthropology and language
