Missionary and doctor in the Melanesian Mission. In May 1892 Welchman arrived at Bogotu, the southern portion of Santa Isabel Island in the Solomon Islands. In 1893 he was ordained a priest and from 1895 to 1903 he was priest in charge of St Luke's College, Siota, in the Solomon Islands

(1) M 728 (originals in private ownership, England): Journals, July 1892 - Nov. 1893, and Dec. 1893 - May 1895, giving an account of life in the Melanesian Islands, recording treatment of diseases and incidents in his life as missionary and teacher. (2) M 805-806 (originals held by the Melanesian Mission, England): contain copies of correspondence, 1887-1889, and his diaries, Jan. 1889 - July 1892, and June 1896 - Nov. 1908. Some of the correspondence was written from Norfolk Island where he stayed for more than a year and became interested in the Mota language.
