Settler in Australia and New Zealand. Petingale arrived in Sydney via Hobart Town in 1833 and worked as superintendant of a farm owned by Captain John Coghill, 35 miles from Sydney. In 1847 he moved to New Zealand where he owned a farm outside Auckland. In 1845 and 1860 he revisited London

Original letters and handwritten transcripts and letters from John George Petingale, mainly to his family in England. They are written from Sydney, Auckland and London and describe his voyage to Australia, first impressions of Hobart Town, Sydney and Auckland, his employment as a farmer in Australia and New Zealand and the landscape and economic conditions of both countries
