    Marine biologist and oceanographer. Born in Canada, Murray was educated in Edinburgh. He was naturalist in charge of collections on the Challenger expedition of 1872-75 which explored the world's great ocean basins. He financed scientific expeditions to Christmas Island and advocated the exploration of Antarctica

    Newspaper cuttings concerning the death of Sir John Murray on 13 March 1914. They are taken from English as well as French, German, Canadian, American and Australian newspapers and describe his death in a car accident, the execution of his will and the establishment of a bequest to commemorate his work
