    John Moore was Archbishop of Canterbury 1783-1805. Richard Johnson (1753-1827) was the first clergyman to practice in Australia. He arrived with the First Fleet in 1788 and stayed until 1800
  • Scope and Content
    The Moore Papers include papers of Richard Johnson and Samuel Marsden.
    1) Memoirs dated 16 Apr. 1794, by Johnson re his life while chaplain to New South Wales, 1786-1794.
    2) Copies of letters 1793-94 to Viscount Melville, Major Francis Grose and Captain David Collins, the Judge Advocate, re Johnson's plans for a church and his quarrels with Grose.
    3) Further memoirs by Johnson dated 6 Aug. 1794, describing events in the colony since Apr. 1794 and including copies of letters sent by him during that period.
    4) Letter 4 May 1794, from Samuel Marsden, Sydney, to William Wilberforce re his voyage to Australia, relations with Governor King and agriculture.
    5) Letter, n.d., to William Wilberforce re the erection of a church in Sydney.
    6) Letter 8 May 1793, from Johnson, Port Jackson to Archbishop Moore.
    7) Plan and evaluation of the first church in Australia built by Johnson in 1793
