    Etcher and officer in the French Navy. Sailed to New Zealand in 1842 on Le Rhin which had been sent to protect the French settlement at Akaroa. He spent four years in the South Pacific making a number of sketches. The rest of his life was spent in Paris where he worked on his famous series of etchings of the city
  • Scope and Content
    1) Letters in French 1821-37, of Meryon's mother, Pierre Narcisse Chaspoux, and Meryon himself to his father. 2) Letters of Charles Meryon to his father including several from Akaroa and the Pacific 1838-63, in French. Letters of others 1855-69, relating to Charles Meryon's insanity and death. 3) Correspondence 1892 of Lewis Meryon, nephew of Dr Meryon, with Frederick Wedmore, about his biography of Charles Meryon. 4) Translations of some of his family's correspondence made by Dr Meryon. Followed by a rough index. 5) Fragment of Dr Meryon's diary, 1818. 6) Official papers, certificates of birth, baptism and naval service, of Charles Meryon. 7) Manuscripts by Charles Meryon: "Annotations de la carte", brief hydrographical notes on New Zealand seas, c. 1846; notes on skies, for tropical and southern landscapes; sketches and notes of South Sea canoes; "Agenda", notes written by Meryon during the last years of his life, with receipts and other papers. 8) The printed sale-catalogues (marked) of two collections of his etchings sold in London 1890 e
